SECO adopts EU humanitarian aid sanctions exemption for Syria

Updated sanction notification

On March 10, 2023, the Federal Council adopted the European Union’s (EU) temporary amendment to its sanctions against Syria in order to facilitate the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid. To this end, he amended the ordinance of June 8, 20121 on measures against Syria (SR 946.231.172.7).

The ordinance of June 8, 2012 on measures against Syria already provides for numerous exceptions for humanitarian purposes. On March 3, 2023, the Federal Council permanently exempted humanitarian actors who receive federal contributions from the ban on providing – directly and indirectly – funds and economic resources to sanctioned persons, organizations or companies to support the work of humanitarian actors in Syria facilitate.

The amended ordinance will come into force on March 10, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. and will apply for a period of six months.
