OFSI publishes its own maritime shipping advisory

Maritime guidance published

OFSI has today published new guidance for the maritime sector.

It provides financial sanctions guidance for entities and individuals which operate in, or with, the maritime shipping sector, especially those involved in areas that may be subject to UK financial sanctions restrictions.

This should be considered supplementary to, and not a replacement for, OFSI’s general guidance document.

Took a quick look at this – 12 page PDF, with separate sections on Syria, Libya, North Korea and Iran. It highlights the use of ship-to-ship transfers, falsified documentation, concealment of sanctioned cargo, and abuse of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) transmitters found on ships, in addition to abuse of cryptocurrency and cyberattacks in conjunction with the shipping activity.
