Breaking News: Sen. McConnell wants to end Burma sanctions

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was quoted today in as saying that he will not seek to extend sanctions against Burma this year in light of the progress they have made toward democracy.

In the Senate yesterday, he said that renewing import bans “would be a slap in the face to Burmese reformers and embolden those within Burma who want to slow or reverse reform.”

Of course, not all people feel the time is ready to lift the sanctions (the EU has already done so) – John Sifton of Human Rights Watch said in an emailed statement “The last year has seen devastating violence against minorities and a stalled reform process,” and called on President Obama to make it clear that lack of further progress has consequences.
