Europe to take a Burma Shave next week

According to Reuters, European Union ambassadors agreed Wednesday that, other than an arms embargo, all remaining economic sanctions should be lifted on Myanmar. This proposal is expected to be ratified by EU foreign ministers at their meeting on Monday.

While the news item in Reuters notes that the document coming out of yesterday's meeting still calls on the Burmese government to release remaining political prisoners, and to better deal with sectarian violence in the country, and its effect on the populace, the recommendation is an explicit acknowledgment of the progress towards an open, less oppressive society that has been made in a very short time.
