The OFAC Book of Why: Weapons of Mass Destruction Sanctions

Although there are three different programs related to Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), the one that is applicable to most organizations performing watchlist screening is the sanctions program implemented under Executive Order 13382 of June 28, 2005. It’s a targeted sanctions program blocking all property of known proliferators and those that support their activities. The original list of those under this program (using the NPWMD program code) was only 8 organizations in North Korea, Iran and Syria.

There are separate posts today of the other 2 WMD-related programs, which are very different from this one, which is a typical asset-freezing program by OFAC’s standards.
